First Woman Graduates
With Enforcement Degree
From the Sept. 8, 1966 Gateway
Three years ago Omaha U. initiated a Law Enforcement and
Security degree. This summer eight students earned such a degree.
One of those eight is a woman. As a matter of fact, she is
the first woman to receive this degree. Adding to her honor, Victoria R.
Bastron also graduated magna cum laude with a 3.8 average.
She is interested in the area of juvenile detention, a
field which she feels more and more women will enter in the years ahead.
And just in case the enforcement business gets a bit
rough, Mrs. Bastron can make use of her newly-acquired knowledge of karate,
which she mastered in addition to her degree.
A native of Red Oak, Ia., she attended Drake University
before coming to OU. Her father is Jonathan B. Richards, a Red Oak attorney and
a member of the State Board of Regents.
According to Mrs. Bastron, more and more women will work
in various phases of law enforcement, adding "the woman's touch." She praised
OU's program, saying her previous experience with juvenile problems so far has
been limited to five-year olds. She is the mother of a five-year old daughter,
Elizabeth.
