Since the university's
inception, UNO students and alumni have proudly served their country in times
of need.
"At the outbreak
of the Spanish-American War, the college men throughout the country were among
the first to volunteer," noted The Gateway yearbook
in 1917, shortly after the United States entered World War I. "And so it
is in the present crisis—the college men take the lead and stand by their
country."
UNO men and women
stood by their country once again during World War II, then during the Korean,
Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars. Today, our fellow graduates and students are
putting their lives on the line in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere, bringing
democracy to downtrodden peoples and fighting for a safer world.
For this, we are
grateful.
As a token of
appreciation and concern for the welfare of our troops, the UNO Alumni
Association through its Annual Fund has established "In Care Of"—military care
packages sent to alumni, students or children of
alumni/students/faculty/staff who are at war.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
If
you know of a UNO alum or student, or of the child of a UNO
alum/student/faculty/staff who currently is serving at war, let us know who
they are! To do so, complete our In Care Of This Soldier form with their name,
mailing address and photo (if available). We'll then send that soldier a
package with various items of need and comfort (see list in care package contents). See who's received
a care package thus far at In the Field.
WRITE A NOTE!
The
Association encourages all of its graduates to participate in its care packages
by writing a letter To the Troops — notes of
encouragement to our UNO-affiliated soldiers. Letters will be compiled as they
are received, formatted in booklet form and included in the care packages. Read
what others have written in Letters to the Troops.
READ THEIR STORIES!
