Regents Name New Chancellor

Dr. Del D. Weber joined the University of Nebraska at Omaha as chancellor on September 1, after being named to the position by the Nebraska Board of Regents in July.

Dr. Weber comes to his new post from Arizona State University in Tempe where he served as dean of the College of Education since 1969. He is no stranger to the problems of the urban university.

Chancellor Weber was part of the administrative team that built Cleveland State from a small independent college to a university that is now considered one of the leaders in urban education. Dr. Weber served at Cleveland State from 1965 to 1969 and was acting provost there in 1967-68.

His accomplishments in his previous position at Arizona State also highlight his commitment t the role a university should play in the community it serves.

As Arizona education dean, a position he held since 1969, Dr. Weber initiated a number of new programs. These include mathematics and reading clinics for school-aged children aimed at diagnosing and overcoming learning problems. He also established a career opportunity program to train Indians for positions in Indian schools. He also began the Arizona Education Information Service, a consortium of Arizona public schools and the university designed to provide a computer-assisted service for easy retrieval of information on a wide range of educational topics.

Chancellor Weber and his wife Lou Ann, are not strangers to Nebraska. They were both born in Columbu8s, Nebraska.

Dr. Weber earned his B.A. degree from Midland College in 1954 and his M.Ed. and Ed. D. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1959 and 1962 respectively.

Dr. Weber taught social studies and English and was principal of Creston, Neb., High School from 1956 to 1958. He was part-time instructor of educational foundations at UN-L in 1985-60. The chancellor was named assistant professor of education at Arizona State in 1962. Dr. Weber joined the staff of Cleveland State University in 1965, serving as assistant to the president and secretary to the board of trustees.

Among the chancellor’s many professional writings are: “The Challenge of Competency Based Teacher Education,” published in 1973; and “Report on the President’s Committee on Student Involvement in the University,” written in collaboration with Joseph Benovich, published in 1969. He is also the author of a book entitled “Secondary Education Today,” published by David McKay.

Chancellor Weber is a member of the American Association of School Administrators, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the Association for Teacher Education.

Dr. Weber is currently president of the Association of Colleges of Teacher Education in State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, a member of the governmental relations committee and a member of the board of directors of the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education.

Dr. and Mrs. Weber have three children.
