Regents Name New Chancellor
Dr. Del
D. Weber joined the University of Nebraska at Omaha as chancellor on September
1, after being named to the position by the Nebraska Board of Regents in July.
Dr. Weber comes to his new post from Arizona State
University in Tempe where he served as dean of the College of Education since
1969. He is no stranger to the problems of the urban university.
Chancellor Weber was part of the administrative team that
built Cleveland State from a small independent college to a university that is
now considered one of the leaders in urban education. Dr. Weber served at
Cleveland State from 1965 to 1969 and was acting provost there in 1967-68.
His accomplishments in his previous position at Arizona
State also highlight his commitment t the role a university should play in the
community it serves.
As Arizona education dean, a position he held since 1969,
Dr. Weber initiated a number of new programs. These include mathematics and
reading clinics for school-aged children aimed at diagnosing and overcoming
learning problems. He also established a career opportunity program to train
Indians for positions in Indian schools. He also began the Arizona Education
Information Service, a consortium of Arizona public schools and the university
designed to provide a computer-assisted service for easy retrieval of
information on a wide range of educational topics.
Chancellor Weber and his wife Lou Ann, are not strangers
to Nebraska. They were both born in Columbu8s, Nebraska.
Dr. Weber earned his B.A. degree from Midland College in
1954 and his M.Ed. and Ed. D. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in
1959 and 1962 respectively.
Dr. Weber taught social studies and English and was
principal of Creston, Neb., High School from 1956 to 1958. He was part-time
instructor of educational foundations at UN-L in 1985-60. The chancellor was
named assistant professor of education at Arizona State in 1962. Dr. Weber
joined the staff of Cleveland State University in 1965, serving as assistant to
the president and secretary to the board of trustees.
Among the chancellor’s many professional writings are:
“The Challenge of Competency Based Teacher Education,” published in 1973; and
“Report on the President’s Committee on Student Involvement in the University,”
written in collaboration with Joseph Benovich, published in 1969. He is also
the author of a book entitled “Secondary Education Today,” published by David
McKay.
Chancellor Weber is a member of the American Association of
School Administrators, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
and the Association for Teacher Education.
Dr. Weber is currently president of the Association of
Colleges of Teacher Education in State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, a
member of the governmental relations committee and a member of the board of
directors of the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education.
Dr. and Mrs. Weber have three children.
