On Nov. 29, 1940, the Gateway reported that a group of Municipal University of Omaha
students were undertaking a large construction effort themselves. The objective
was to create an ice skating rink outdoors in the area just south of Arts &
Sciences Hall.
The rink was sponsored by the Independents, a
group of students not affiliated with Greek fraternities or sororities. It was
being built with the hope of forming intramural ice hockey teams and classes in
ice hockey.
Flooding of the rink had commenced, and it was
to be open and available as soon as it was completely frozen. The Independents
also planned to have lights installed for night skating.
