The full-length collection of poetry also was chosen by Foreword Magazine as one of the top 10 poetry collections for 2002 and was awarded both the Virginia Commonwealth University Larry Levis Prize for the best first or second book of poetry published in 2002 and The Nebraska Book Award for Poetry for 2002. It is a gripping true story about the first person to go through the Valley Hope Treatment Center in O'Neill, Nebraska, for addiction to prescription barbiturates and narcotics. Joel's book takes the reader through the moment his family intervened after finding him homeless and near death, to how to go through losses and death cycles without dying from them. This book is a simple guide that will inspire addicts and alcoholics, as well as their families, to be hopeful and to gain an understanding and appreciation of the positive ripple effect staying straight and sober can have.
