All Smiles for UNO Employee of the Year Frank Burton

Frank
Burton, custodial supervisor for environmental services at UNO, has a
contagious smile— just ask any of his co-workers. On May 1 his friendly smile
grew even larger when he was named Employee of the Year at the annual Faculty
Senate/Staff Advisory Council Recognition dinner.
"I was caught totally off-guard," he said. "I was just
listening to the talk and didn't expect it at all."
Burton carries out a variety of tasks at UNO—some of which
can be stressful—but he manages to get the job done with a smile and great
care. His "service with a smile" is one of the many reasons Burton was selected
as Employee of the Month for June 2001. It also contributed to his receiving
the Employee of the Year Award.
As Employee of the Year, Burton receives $500, a stipend
sponsored by the UNO Alumni Association.
Burton said he enjoys working at UNO because it is like
"one big family all across campus." On average, he interacts with 25-50 people
each day.
"You have friends wherever you go," Burton said. "It is
really energizing, and it makes you feel good." Burton said his tasks vary from
day to day, and it gives him a good feeling when projects come together.
"Frank is like the calm in the storm. His very presence
sets a positive tone for any project," one nominator wrote. "I can always count
on a friendly smile and unmatched expertise from Frank."
Burton said his secret to staying positive at work is
being a "people person. I enjoy dealing with all kinds of people," he said.
"The more people you meet, the more friends you have."
In 2001, Burton celebrated his 15th anniversary at UNO—a
milestone he appreciates. "It's just good to come to work every day" he said.
"There's always something different that needs to be done, and I like to stay
busy."
He also said UNO employees are easy to work with.
"Everybody works together at UNO, and that makes things happen. Maybe it's just
me, but I like that. When you see
things getting done, it makes you feel better."
