Vickie Stone - Employee of the Year
By Becky Bohan Brown
As a result of UNO's metropolitan connection, many campus
employees find themselves interacting with individuals from the surrounding
community. In some cases, this interaction goes well beyond the city's borders
and even spans continents.
The latter is especially true for Vickie Stone.
It was for this type of rare guidance that Stone, UNO's
Employee of the Month for November, was chosen Employee of the Year. Stone was
picked from among the past 12 Employee of the Month recipients and was
presented with the honor April 26.
As Employee of the Year, Stone receives $500, the stipend
sponsored by the UNO Alumni Association.
For the past 10 years, Stone has worked in UNO's
International Studies and Programs (IS&P) Office. Prior to that, she worked
in IS&P as a work-study student while attending school. She has formally
studied five foreign languages and received her bachelor's degree in
international studies and Spanish from UNO.
As IS&P's administrative technician I, a typical day
for Stone entails on-the-spot Spanish translations, responding to phone
inquiries and advising students.
"Vickie is unfailingly generous and patient in dealing
with students, staff and faculty from all cultures," said Thomas Gouttierre,
dean of International Studies and Programs. "People around the world express
their wonderment about her uncommon sensitivity and helpfulness. Vickie's
conscientious approach by phone, fax and the Internet wins fans and friends for
UNO, just as does her personal representation."
