2002 Outstanding Service Awards
(OMAHA,
NE) — The UNO Alumni Association issued three of its
Outstanding Service Awards during the organization’s annual Chairman of the
Board Dinner Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The dinner, hosted by Alumni Association
Chairman of the Board Don Winters, was held at Ironwood Country Club in
appreciation for the efforts of the 27-member UNO Alumni Association Board of
Directors.
Outstanding Service Awards honor faculty, staff, alumni
or friends who have shown continuous, outstanding service to the alumni
association and/or university. Receiving 2002 Outstanding Service Awards were
Gary Anderson, Bruce W. Bisson and Ruth Manning.
Anderson is UNO’s director of Sports
Information, a post he has held since 1979. He has been instrumental in serving
the Alumni Association’s Hall of Fame Nominating and Selection Committees,
serving on the former body for 23 years while also serving as a liaison to the
latter. The Hall of Fame promotes recognition of outstanding athletic
achievement and/or support to UNO’s athletic programs. Anderson was sports
editor of the Gateway, UNO’s student
newspaper, from 1968-70.
Bisson is past chairman of the Association’s
Board of Directors. During his tenure as chairman the Association raised a
record-$40,000 at the annual Scholarship Swing golf outing. It also topped
$425,000 in unrestricted donations to the 2001 UNO Annual Fund. Bisson is a
1978 UNO graduate with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He is chief operating
officer of Nexadental, an Omaha-based company which sells dental and
orthodontic supplies, products and services to customers worldwide.
Though she retired in 1998 after a long career
with UNO’s department of University Relations, Manning remains an active presence on campus. She assists with
planning for the annual Chancellor’s Scholarship Swing fund raiser and
volunteers her time coordinating activities on the day of the event. Manning
also occasionally staffs the reception lobby of the Association’s William H.
Thompson Alumni Center when a replacement is needed and serves on the board of
UNO’s Program for Women and Successful Aging.
